Topic: Lessons From The Ground 3
MEMORISE: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” – 1 Peter 5:6
READ: Philippians 2:9-11
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Deuteronomy 20-22; Mark 14:26-50
MESSAGE:
Humus, which means soil is from the same root word as humility. One major lesson to learn from the ground is humility. John 12:24 says:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”
There is a reason Jesus Christ did not say “fall on the ground”, but He said “fall into the ground”. When a person falls onto the ground, he can still stand up, but when he falls into the ground, he is enveloped by the ground, there is no standing up then. Many people are humble only for a while, at some point, when the humility becomes inconvenient, they get up from the ground to see how tall they can be.
Falling in to the ground is falling to the lowest possible point and staying there.it is being the richest child in your school and getting insulted by someone who thinks he is richer than you but you still choose not show off your father’s wealth. It is hanging out with people who are not as brilliant as you without making them feel that they are dull. Jesus Christ is a perfect example of someone who fell into the ground. He being the son of God should not have dwelt among men on this dirty planet, not to talk of being tortured by men, but He was humble even until death in the cross and God exalted Him greatly in return. If you are humble, God will give you unusual grace to excel above everyone else.
Key Point: The humbler you are, the higher God will raise you.
Hymn 3: When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
1 When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
2 Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
3 Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
4 But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
5 Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
