Topic: The Blessings Of Solitude

Memorise: And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. Matthew 14:23

Read: Genesis 32:23-30

23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Bible In One Year: Genesis 36-37; Matthew 12:1-21

MESSAGE:

To be in solitude means to be alone. The eagle unlike other birds flies alone, no wonder it remains a bird of a kind. It would climb the tallest tree on the highest mountain, pluck off its feathers and grow new ones. If you want to be distinct in all aspects of your life, you must learn to be alone often. Jesus Christ showed us an example in our memory verse for today. While He was on earth, He would leave His disciples and go to a separate place to pray: no wonder He performed signs and wonders wherever He went. If you want to be distinct amongst your peers, you must know when to separate yourself from the crowd and friends.

If you must succeed in life, you need to shun distractions and to achieve this, you need to be alone. You need to be alone in order to hear from God. You also need to study alone. Sometimes in order to have deep insights on topics – whether academic books or the Bible.

Key Point:

Great people make preparations in the secret place

Hymn 20: When We Walk With The Lord

1 When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
For the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
